Siberian Husky Breeders, Before you buy, part 1

Siberian Husky Breeders and Puppy Mills

People who wish to buy purebred dogs might think of pet stores as the first source of affordable and available puppies. I strongly suggest you do not select this alternative. I seldom tour pet stores, and I do not know exact prices for any given breed, however, I know their stock generally does not come cheap. Their animals might be a few hundred dollars cheaper than what a breeder would charge, could come with pedigree papers, however you won’t really know a puppy’s history and background. You won’t know what the parents were like, nor if they had a good temperament and/or health.

Many pet stores stock their inventories with animals that come from puppy mills. In this situation, besides the fact you wouldn’t know your puppy’s background, you would also be supporting a very unethical industry. Dogs bred in puppy mills live in atrocious, poor at best, conditions; they are bred until exhaustion, with no concern for parents or offspring quality. Puppy mills are not illegal (but they are very unethical), because they can operate with necessary permits and licenses, however, only minimal care is provided to animals in order to avoid troubles with the law.

Purebred dogs suffer from certain genetic diseases; each breed is more prone to one or another. Unless a puppy’s parents have a clean bill of health, that Siberian Husky puppy might develop temperamental or health problems that can quickly add up maintenance costs; eventually, such a situation might even force you to end what could be a wonderful relationship, because the dog has to be untimely put to sleep.

When you deal with ethical Siberian Husky breeders, you will be provided with a healthy puppy, a guarantee that this puppy will grow up to be a good quality pet, and a chance to meet the parents, which can give you a good idea what to expect out of your pet when it grows up. Reputable Siberian Husky breeders will go as far as take back problematic puppies and replace them if the pet you acquired did not quite satisfy the breeder’s quality guaranties. Do you think a pet store can do this for you down the line in case you cannot handle your dog’s problems?

In case one day you can no longer provide for your dog, due to strenuous life situations, some Siberian Husky breeders will take back the dog so that you do not have to abandon it on the streets, or at the local pet shelter. Pet stores will obviously not care to do this for you once your warranty period has expired (if there is even such a thing available). Reputable Siberian Husky breeders will also not sell their dogs to anyone who shows up at their door steps. Potential buyers will be screened by the breeders to ensure future dogs living conditions and buyer life demands/restrictions will allow the owner to take good care of his/her dog.
